The second annual USTA College Alumni Tennis Classic was held Feb. 1-2 on the grounds of the USTA National Campus. The event marked the first year for the women’s division, which went to the crew representing Texas A&M, while the UNC Charlotte (White) squad prevailed on the men’s side. Both teams went undefeated at 3-0 on the weekend.

A soggy Saturday in Orlando forced a change in the schedule, eliminating the playoff round on Sunday, meaning the team on top of the standing at the end of round-robin play was crowned the champion. Every squad played two duals on Saturday and a third on Sunday.

Along with Texas A&M, Washington University in St. Louis, William & Mary, and Williams College made up the women’s field. UNC Charlotte had a Green and White squad in the men’s competition plus groups representing FIU and UNC Wilmington.

The Aggies were the class of the women’s competition, winning eight of the nine courts they contested en route to their 3-0 overall record. It was their head-to-head matchup with Washington-St. Louis that decided the champion, with the Texas A&M tandem of Anna Dickerson and Nicki Mechem winning 8-1 at line one and 8-6 on court three. Washington-St. Louis finished as the runner-up, while Williams placed third and William & Mary fourth.

Texas A&M’s full roster consisted of Marissa Grossfeld, Tiffany Milner, Anna Dickerson, Nicki Mechem.

For the men’s title, UNC Charlotte’s (White) 2-1 triumph against UNC Wilmington was the crucial result on the weekend. All three sets were tight, with Vik Hundal and Alex Calott hanging on for a tough 8-6 victory at the top spot. They then moved to line three, where they suffered an 8-6 defeat at the hands of UNC Wilmington’s Christiaan Van der Burgh and Joshua Hublitz; however, their teammates Jack Williams and Nate Shanok came through in the clutch, turning in an 8-5 effort at the second spot. UNC Charlotte (Green) took third place and FIU ended in the fourth spot.
