Opening day at the 69th USTA Florida “Bobby Curtis” Junior State Singles Championships kicked off on Saturday with BG18-16 play at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, and BG14-12 play at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs.

The Girls’ 18s saw the most upheaval among the Top 10 seeds as Bradenton’s Gia Cohen upset the No. 4 seed, Lithia’s Maggie Pate upended the No. 7 seed, and Weston’s Ayshe Can ousted the No. 8 seed.

Unseeded Grey Cacciatore of Gainesville, last year’s runner-up in the Boys’ 16s, made a statement in the first round of the Boys’ 18s, defeating No. 15 seed Antonio Mora of Coconut Grove from a set down 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.

The Boys’ 16s saw the Nos. 13, 14, and 15 seeds all go out in the first round courtesy of upset-makers Micah Braswell of Sarasota, Caden Sikorski of Ormond Beach, and Benjamin Zipay of Osprey.
