Some of the best tennis players in the world arrived at the USTA National Campus with the Pro Circuit Women's $25K, the first professional tournament held at the new facility. Qualifying took place on Jan. 14 with the singles final wrapping up the event on Jan. 22.

Former world No. 95 Katarzyna Piter, of Poland, defeated American teenager Sofia Kenin, 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-4, in the final on a windy day in Orlando. This was Piter’s eighth pro singles title and her first title won in the United States. This was Kenin’s third USTA Pro Circuit singles final since July.

Piter, 25, is a former Top 100 player, peaking at No. 95 in the world in singles in May 2014 and No. 67 in doubles in April 2014. Piter has competed in the main draw of all four Grand Slams in 2014. She faced current world No. 1 Angelique Kerber in the 2014 French Open and former world No. 2 Simona Halep in the 2014 Australian Open.  Piter now holds eight USTA Pro Circuit and ITF Circuit singles titles all over the world, as well as 18 doubles titles. She also represented Poland in Fed Cup in 2009, 2013, and 2014.

Kenin, 18, of Pembroke Pines, Fla., was a standout junior, who climbed as high as No. 2 in the ITF World Junior Rankings and reached the final of the 2015 junior US Open. Also in 2015, she won the USTA Girls’ 18s National Championships to earn a wild card into that year’s US Open main draw. In 2016, Kenin won the USTA Pro Circuit’s US Open Wild Card Challenge to again earn a wild card into the US Open, facing eventual finalist Karolina Pliskova in the first round. Kenin also won two USTA Pro Circuit singles titles last year and improved from No. 620 in the world at the end of 2015 to No. 212 at the end of 2016. Kenin is currently ranked No. 213 in the world in singles.

The doubles final took place on Jan. 21 with Americans Sophie Chang and Madeleine Kobelt winning the title over top seeds Piter and Paula Kania, 6-3, 3-6, [10-6].  This is Chang’s fifth USTA Pro Circuit doubles title and Kobelt’s sixth USTA Pro Circuit/ITF Circuit doubles title. In addition to her doubles success, Chang won the US Open National Playoffs – Women’s Singles Championship to earn a singles wild card into the US Open qualifying draw in 2016. Kobelt was a standout at Syracuse, graduating in 2014.
