The inaugural Orlando Open, a USTA Pro Circuit ATP Challenger event, began Monday at the USTA National Campus.

The tournament is the first USTA Pro Circuit ATP Challenger event of the 2019 season and is also marks the highest level of tennis to be on display to date at the National Campus, with a prize-money pool of more than $54,000.

Day one’s action included the event’s two qualifying singles matches, where Brazil’s Joao Magalhaes Hueb de Menezes came back to defeat Roberto Ortega-Olmedo of Spain 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 and American JJ Wolf defeated Gijs Brouwer from Netherlands 7-5, 7-6(5).

A total of 12 main draw singles matches were also contested on the day, highlighted by eight American players picking up victories. Ulises Blanch and Evan King along with wildcards Evan Song and Michael Redlicki all advanced in straight sets; Marcos Giron, Alexander Sarkissian, Stefan Kozlov and wildcard Sam Riffice got through in three set matches. Two other American wildcards – Jared Hiltzik and Alex Rybakov – jumped out to early leads before suffering defeat.

Tuesday’s order of play is set for a 10 a.m. start, as first round singles matches continue and the opening round of doubles will also get underway. Admission to the Orlando Open is free.
