USTA Boys' 12s National Clay Court Championships
Day Two
July 18, 2017

Day 2 saw the singles main draw slimmed down to 32 before severe weather once again interrupted doubles play at the 2017 USTA Boys’ 12s National Clay Court Championships, part of the USTA adidas Junior National Championship Series, held at the USTA National Campus at Lake Nona in Orlando, Fla. A total of seven second-round doubles matches went unfinished on Tuesday.
Action began at 8 a.m. with matches from the opening round of doubles that were not completed on Monday. The 64-team draw features 16 seeded duos, three of which were knocked out in the first round.
Jacob Smith (Daniel Island, S.C.), who pulled off the tournament’s major upset in Round 1 of singles, teamed up with Davis Taylor (Atlanta) to take down the fifth-seeded pair of Raghav Jangbahadur (Palo Alto, Calif.) and Emon van Loben Sels (Sacramento, Calif.), 4-6, 6-1, [10-6]. Smith and Taylor also got in their second-round match before the stoppage of play, defeating Kaylan and Meecah Bigun (Surprise, Ariz.), 7-6, 6-4.
The remaining first-round upsets in doubles were provided by Ethan Carr (Birmingham, Ala.) and Eric Suk (Macon Ga.) – who recorded a 6-3, 4-6, [10-5] victory over No. 14 seeds Alan Hua (Ridgewood, N.J.) and James Lian (Parsippany, N.J.) – along with Kurt and Ian Miller (Los Gatos, Calif.), as they easily beat the 14th-seeded tandem of Jake Kennedy (Atlanta, Ga.) and Andrew Rundle (Simpsonville, S.C.), 6-2, 6-2.
For the round-of-32 doubles matches that are in the books, the only surprise came in the form of No. 10 seeds Adhithya Ganesan (Clarksburg, Md.) and Brett Keeling (Tulsa, Okla.) falling to Leanid Boika (Delray Beach, Fla.) and Yair Gritzman (Boca Raton, Fla.), 6-4, 6-3.
Five more seeds were taken out as the second round of singles wrapped up on Tuesday, but the tournament’s top four seeds have been on cruise control so far. Top seed Cooper Williams (New York) held off Mikel Anderson (Hillsboro Beach, Fla.), 6-4, 6-3, in his round-of-64 matchup, while No. 2 seed Learner Tien (Irvine, Calif.) recorded a 6-0, 6-2 win over Alec Martinez (San Juan, P.R.). Third-seeded Lucas Brown (Plano, Texas) has given up only a single game through his first two rounds. No. 4 seed Aidan Kim (Milford, Mich.) has been similarly dominant, winning both his matches by the margin of 6-0, 6-1.
